Fifth graders have just finished an in depth unit on landscape art with a strong focus on fore, middle and backgrounds, and the use of overlapping to create the “illusion of depth”. They began the year with clay and have returned to this project in various stages while exploring other mediums to render landscapes in the mean time.
This project had two major parts. First, 5th grade students had to build a 3D landscape making sure to incorporate at least 3 distinct textures and ensure strong “score & slip” connections between clay pieces. After firing students painted a base coat to cover the clay before adding multiple layers of detail work.
Students looked at real landscapes to inspire their creations, which ones would you like to visit?
