Modern Students: Traditional Medium

Fifth graders explored a new medium in this latest lesson: the Quill Pen.

Students observed photos of animals and carefully drew them in pencil with a focusing on the textures of fur, feathers and scales as well as a range of value and shading.

After that practice they redrew the animals in pen and ink, learning as they worked that the values that were easy to create with smudged pencil are much more challenging with a pen that allows only hatching and cross hatching.

Students had to work with drips and mistakes and figure out how to create a range of darks and lights using only black ink.
