7th graders examined the work of Maine artist/illustraor Dahlov Ipcar. After choosing an animal (that they previously drew in careful detail) the students simplified the shapes then divided the piece in a kaleidoscope style to add abstraction. Like Ipcar, whose work emphasizes shape, pattern and the use of vivid color, the students separated their animal from its environment using warm and cool colors in their paintings.
The paintings that best exemplified the the qualities we looked at Dahlov Ipcar’s work, as well as the careful painting and use of warm and cool colors are on display at the Supermarket on Route 1 in Falmouth. Check them out when you are next grabbing groceries.
