5th graders Explore the world

Students in grade 5 are in the middle of a large landscape unit. The started by creating 3D sculptures of landscapes in clay (coming soon to a blog near you) and while those sculptures fired they draw their landscapes in pastel as away of both planning their color schemes and learning about the “illusion of depth”.  This is the idea of creating a 3D space on a 2D surface. Students focused on fore, middle, and background, as well as overlapping and perspective. They also worked hard to eliminate all white paper from the page and really tried to use the pastel as “mini paint-sticks.”
