The fifth grade has finished painting the final layer on their three dimensional landscapes. The students looked at many pictures of natural landscapes from around the world and we made a list of every different kind of biome we could think of as reference.
The sculptures began by rolling out slabs of clay and using crumpled newspaper to lift landmasses and build hills, valleys and islands. Then students added many textures to create a varied surface on their sculptures. Once fired, the landscapes were painted with a single base coat that covered every nook and cranny. Finally students went back in with careful detail and dry brush technique to bring life to their pieces.
