Exhaustive 5th grade Animal Study Ends with Beautiful Drawings

5th graders have just completed a long unit on drawing in which they worked to create an accurate drawing of an animal based on a photograph. These observation drawings involved careful examination of basic shapes, then adding details including textures and a range of values. The second stage of the unit meant re-drawing the animals the students are now familiar with in pen and ink.  This added the new challenge of creating multiple values (shading) using only black ink and hatched and cross-hatched lines with a medium that is much more difficult to control.
