5th grade Coil Pots

Fifth graders have just finished a small scale ceramic piece using a time tested method of clay building.  This coil pottery lesson uses an ancient technique employed by cultures from around the world including the Greeks, Aztecs, Incas, Native Americans all the way to modern people.  Wrapping coils to build up a large, even pot without a potter’s wheel. While many cultures would finish the pieces by smoothing away the coils, our students focused on creating some added 3D patterns, swirls, beads, etc. with their coils. Some were made water tight by smoothing the inside.  More pattern in the color glazing stage.
