Dark, dramatic selves

The students in the 7th grade art class work on many varied projects from ceramics to painting to cartooning.  The work here are self-portraits in charcoal.
A new medium for most of he students, charcoal can be a challenge because of its messiness and unpredictability.  The students rose to the occasion, first toning the paper with a middle grey, then starting with the eraser to capture the highlights.  They then went in with more charcoal to find the darkest shadows and finally used white charcoal pencils to pick out the most delicate spots of light in eyes and hair.
