Artwork by Falmouth Middle School students was in the spotlight this past Friday at 555 Restaurant for Portland’s 1st Friday Art-Walk. The exhibit was the culmination of a collaborative project between Mr. Adams’ 7th and 8th grade students and Zest magazine, the new food and fine dining magazine in Maine. Mr. Adams illustrates for the publication and owner, Nancy Gordon, asked if he had any “food inspired” student art that could work in the mag. Mr. Adams gave his students many pictures of food to observe and the open-ended question, “What does food mean to you?” and let students take it from there.
The goal was not a prescribed art lesson, but one about illustration, clients, and deadlines. Students were encouraged to find and use their own style and answer the question with their own vision. If the work was completed by the deadline, it was submitted to Nancy and her staff. In the end, Nik Hester had his piece chosen out of over 70 submissions to be featured in the “Renderings” sections of Zest‘s premiere issue.
