Gargoyles

Seventh grade students finished their intensive Medieval unit in Social Studies with various workshops.  One group made ceramic gargoyles.  Students thought about the reasons for gargoyles, such as reminding the largely illiterate population of the pitfalls of sin, and protecting them from evil once they were safely inside the church. Not to mention their very utilitarian function as water spouts.

After the sculptures were fired, students painted them with gold, copper or bronze acrylic paint to create a metallic look.  Here are the results.
