Illusion of Depth

Fifth graders have just finished a lengthy unit about landscape and creating the Illusion of Depth on a flat surface. They started with true 3 dimensionality and built ceramic landscapes, next they drew landscapes with pastel.  These drawings considered not only fore, middle and backgrounds, but also how to use heavy pastel to create layers of color as well as objects.   Finally they finished with a small scale collage on which the had to force at least 7 layers of overlapping into a tiny 4 inch square.  The results are below.
