Printmaking across the grades

As 8th graders finish up their Pop-Art self portrait prints, 5th graders are also completing a printmaking lesson. They were inspired by the basic shapes and jointed forms of insects and arachnids. Students began by drawing from photos of bugs, then transferred the images to styrofoam and pressed into the surface with wooden styluses. Ink was then rolled on and printed using a traditional barrel printing press. Students needed to print both in black and white and color, finding the right amount of ink and keeping fingerprints off the final work. They then mounted and titled the pieces for display.
