Mask from the Other Coast

Seventh grade students looked at the distinct design style of the artwork from the Pacific Northwest region of North America. We talked about how coastal living affected the design styles and how the constant crashing of waves led PNW imagery to be both strong and smooth.  After discussing the concept of “spirit animals” they chose an animal and created a mask with these specific designs in mind.

Masks had to be three dimensional (using both additive and subtractive sculpting techniques) and students were limited to only five colors for their glazing.
